Full Chrome is a computer-created short film with retro-futuristic visual expression. In this work, I use my life and growth experience in China during the past two decades as an introduction to build a shining world of fantasy on top of it.

A big thank you goes to Richard Neville, the master of storytelling for inspiring me to seize a world where my fantasy and reality are intertwined. As well as million thanks to my friend Zuheng Yin who patiently answered my various questions during the production.

Style frames:

"I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams." - Hamlet, II.ii

The story behind this work is intertwisted through a lot of unspeakable feelings and details that I had during growing up. Kitsch, utilitarianism, and over formalization in China make me feel oppressed all the time even until today. Just like the woman standing under the compass from the 18th century satirical prints, the environment in which I live requires me to comply with ultra-strict regulations and move forward to the ‘socially and politically right’, and use quantitative methods to evaluate my character and morality again and again..

All this thing pushed me to construct my own fantasy world and builds an increasingly complete and extremely shiny world within my mind. Everything here is plated with flickering chromatic to bring me through reality and escape the bad dream.

Design & Production:

I designed almost every detail to tally my fantasy, from Carlo Bugatti's throne to the full metal teddy bear, as well as the high shoulder leather jacket inclined to Rick Owens FW2020 PERFORMA... I used MarvelousDesigner, Cinema4D, Octane, AfterEffect to implement the basic workflow. I do wish I can use SubstancePainter in the future to replace the crappy texture painting in Photoshop.
